Responding to accidents
Observe
Stay calm and get an overview of the situation:
- What has happened?
- Who is involved?
- Who is affected?
Think
Look out for any possible dangers to helpers, other piste users or the accident victim, and plan how to proceed. If possible, ask others to help too.
Act
Secure the accident site
Protect the group and yourself. Mark the scene of the accident with crossed skis, or post at least one person as a lookout. Look after any involved children at the edge of the piste.
Give first aid
First aid should be tailored to the injured person.

Alert the rescue services
Either alert the Piste and Rescue Service (PRS) by phoning the dedicated number of the ski area, 144 (ambulance service) or the European emergency number 112. Alerts are increasingly being triggered by dedicated emergency apps. The rescue services need the following information:
- Where is the scene of the accident?
- Who is calling?
- What has happened?
- How many people are affected?
Case studies
Notify
After an accident, notify the respective snow sports school, camp or ski club leaders, as well as the families of those involved.
Provide your personal details
In the event of a serious accident, all those involved and any witnesses must be available to cooperate with the PRS or the police.
